118 Years Ago Butch Cassidy Invented Train Robbery In Wyoming
On this day in 1899, near Wilcox, Wyoming, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid staged the 1st train robbery, of the Union Pacific Overland Flyer. I blame the fellows he fell in with at the state prison in Laramie, Wyoming.
Pictured with The Wild Bunch are, seated left, Harry Longabaugh, “The Sundance Kid,” and right, Robert LeRoy Parker “Butch Cassidy.”
Before he bought his ranch near Dubois, Wyoming, young Parker was mentored by horse thief/cattle rustler Mike Cassidy. After working as a butcher in Rock Springs, Wyoming, hence the nickname “Butch”, he took on ‘Cassidy’ in honor of Mike.
