Millions of long-suffering Chicago Cubs fans are celebrating their first World Series victory in 108 years this week. Here in Wyoming, some baseball fans have their own World Series memory.

60 years ago, the University of Wyoming baseball team became the first, and only, team in school history to make the College Baseball World Series.

By 1956, Bud Daniels had established Wyoming baseball as the premier program in the region.

In those days, only eight teams made the College World Series. After coming up short in the 1954 and 1955 NCAA Regionals, the Skyline Conference champions finally punched their ticket to Omaha.

The Pokes lost the first game of the World Series to the eventual national champions Minnesota. After defeating New York University, they came up short again against Bradley and finished as the sixth-best team in the country.

The 1956 Cowboys Baseball team was inducted into the University of Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame in 2006.

After 20 seasons in Laramie, Bud Daniels retired as the winningest coach in program history and was later inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame.

Unfortunately, budget cuts forced the University of Wyoming to discontinue the sport in 1996.

Although it's now been 20 years since Wyoming's once-proud baseball team took the field, there are still a few fans left who can remember their one shining World Series moment six decades ago.
