Wildlife encounters have not been nor have they ever been an uncommon sight here in Colorado. In fact, in the past several years (especially this year) it seems like there have been so many more than usual. While that's probably largely in part to more people having cameras, such as security cameras and their phones always sitting nearby, it's a lot easier to document wildlife now than in the past. Still, wildlife, especially around this time of year is certainly not an uncommon sight here in the Centennial State.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge is an area that is basically a vast playground for wildlife, in particular bison, that you can drive into. This is a place where you can freely watch these animals in their element.

However, when we venture into THEIR habitat, things happen. Sometimes bad things, other times scary things, and sometimes...cute and sweet things like this.

Check out these giant bison that seem to be enjoying their encounter with a Volkswagon:

This is kind of nerve-wracking to watch so I can't imagine being inside the car because bison are BIG. They can weigh anywhere between 1000 to 2200 pounds (so some can weigh about a much as a car) and if they decide to charge, they can run up to 35 miles per hour. They could do some serious damage to your car and you if you're not careful.

Typically, they're fine, but if they feel threatened, just like us humans...they will do what they need to do to protect themselves.

What I'm trying to say here is this: don't ever get out of a car or try to get closer to a bison (or any wild animal) just so you can get that cool picture for Instagram.

This really cool wildlife sanctuary near Denver features over 300 animals and is open daily from sunrise to sunset and is free to visit. You can check out more on it HERE.
