Beatles Classics Covered and Sampled on ‘Late Show With David Letterman’
The indie-rock duo Broken Bells covered the Beatles' 'And I Love Her' on 'Late Show With David Letterman' last night and threw in a sample of ''I Am the Walrus' for good measure. You can watch a video of their performance above.
The group's performance kicked off Letterman's week-long celebration of the Beatles' breakthrough appearance on 'The Ed Sullivan Show,' which took place on Feb. 9, 1964.
This isn't the first time that Broken Bells' Brian Burton (a DJ and producer who goes by the name Danger Mouse) has tinkered with the Fab Four. A decade ago, he released 'The Grey Album,' which combined music from the Beatles' 1968 White Album with vocals lifted from Jay-Z's 'The Black Album. He also worked on U2's upcoming album.
Along with Broken Bells bandmate James Mercer (who also fronts indie rockers the Shins), Burton helped rework the Beatles' 1964 love song 'And I Love Her' into a moody set piece that contained elements from the group's 1967 freak-out 'I Am the Walrus.'
Also scheduled to perform and pay tribute to the Beatles on Letterman this week are Sting, Lenny Kravitz, the Flaming Lips and Sean Lennon, son of the late John Lennon. Rumor has it that surviving Beatles members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr will stop by the show on Friday.
