The Cheyenne Board of Public Utilities is warning people about a phone scam featuring a phony BOPU employee.

The caller has been reported as threatening to cut off water and sewer service if the intended victim didn't immediately give them cash.

BOPU spokeswoman Dena Egenhoff says customers can always verify whether someone really works for the BOPU by calling 637-6460 or by visiting the BOPU offices at 2416 Snyder. She says anyone who receives a suspicious call should use their caller ID to find out what number the call came from as well as the date and time so those details can be used to investigate the call.

Egenhoff says the BOPU reports phone scams involving phony BOPU employees to the Cheyenne Police Department.
