Saturday, September 17 at 10 am - 2 pm, say thank you to those that make Cheyenne a better place to live at Cheyenne Wyoming Hero Appreciation Day at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center

Bad things happen to people in Cheyenne. YOU don’t often see it, but there are those who do, and they deal with it. People’s lives are changed forever by a gun, a horrible car accident or a fire. There are people without the skills to deal with life’s bad hands and want to take an early out or numb the pain with self-medication.

Life gets messy, even ugly at times. I hate to think what this town would be like without those noble people who give of themselves to help others.

The phrase “They run into burning buildings while others are running out” seems glib and hackneyed until you see the results of a really bad burn or the aftermath of a mass shooting yourself. To risk everything you have to help others, that takes a special person, a hero. Luckily, Cheyenne has a lot of them.

You may have seen the firefighters giving up their bar-b-cue time with family to collect money to help those with Muscular Dystrophy over the Labor Day weekend. Cheyenne Police and Laramie County Sheriffs were cleaning up ugly while you were celebrating the 3-day weekend.

It’s time they get some recognition, and they will.

Saturday, September 17 at 10 am - 2 pm, say thank you to those that make Cheyenne a better place to live. Cheyenne Wyoming Hero Appreciation Day at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center will dedicate 4 hours of recognition for those that give countless hours throughout the year and sacrifice so much for strangers so that we are safer and better off.

Wyoming Search and Rescue teams completed 253 missions in hopes of saving 407 lives in 2015. In the US, 20 Veterans kill themselves EACH DAY and Cheyenne is not immune. There are people who try to prevent suicide or have to deal with the aftermath. This is ugly you can’t unsee.  There is a teacher who saved a child from slipping into “the dark side” with extra kindness and attention. There is someone who helps the elderly while someone else who works with disabled children to have the tiniest bit of normalcy in their lives. Stride Learning Center, Habitat For Humanity, Dads Making A Difference, Cheyenne Wheels For Charity and many others will be there in support, you should be there too.

Do you know a hero? Nominate them!

"It’s All The Fun Of Anthrax Outbreak Without All That You Know, Death ‘N Stuff"

The Cheyenne-Laramie County Health Department will be conducting a mock emergency exercise featuring a response to an anthrax outbreak. There will a Black Hawk UH60 Helicopter, a military inflatable obstacle course the size of a basketball court is coming from the US ARMY National Guard. The Cheyenne Therapeutic Equestrian Center is bringing 4 of their amazing horses out so you can see the work this group and these animals do for our community.

Introduce yourself and your children to real heroes. There’s free food, live music and lots more, but really it’s about recognition and thanks to those who make our lives better in Cheyenne.

The event will be at the Veterans Administration Medical Center and Emergency Preparedness Drill will be at Laramie County Community College with busses running between the two. Find out more HERE.
