Cheyenne police are warning residents about a scam targeting Facebook users in which people can get $100,000 to $500,000 grants from the "U.S. Treasury" for just a few thousand dollars.

Police say the scammers are reaching people via Facebook Messenger through profiles that have been compromised.

"The scammers pose as your Facebook friend and start out with a seemingly innocent 'Hello, how are you,'" said police.  "The fake friend then says they have been compensated by the ‘federal government’ and suggests that you should do the same."

"They provide a phone number to contact, which then texts you and asks for personal information," police added.  "If this seems suspicious, the ‘agent’ will text you a photo of his credentials and a letter explaining the legitimacy."

Police say the U.S. Treasury will not contact citizens via text message or Facebook, and urge folks to keep their personal information private and secure.
