LARAMIE -- Why did Ethan Day choose to continue his college football career at Wyoming? The answer is not as complicated as you might think.

"I have always been a fan," the Copperopolis, Calif., product said.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound edge rusher signed on the dotted line Jan. 6, joining the Cowboys as a walk-on. Next week, he will arrive in Laramie after spending one season playing linebacker at Modesto Junior College where he tallied 13 tackles, six for loss and racked up three quarterback sacks over a nine-game span.

Day was named a Valley All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2022 and was named the Defensive MVP of the Bay Area Cali Classic All-Star Football Game as a senior at Ripon High School.

Day hopes to bring another element to a position group that finished second in the Mountain West last fall with 37 sacks.

"I am an explosive and physical player in the trenches with great power and the ability to use my hand technique to get around defenders," he said. "I can’t wait to get to work."

Day, who has three years of eligibility remaining, joins DeVonne Harris, Braden Siders and Sabastian Harsh on the Cowboys' defensive line unit. Harsh missed all of 2022 with a knee injury and Oluwaseyi Omotosho, who racked up 6.5 sacks, left in the NCAA Transfer Portal after the regular-season finale and recently signed at Oregon State.

Day said it was a no-brainer when it came to slipping on that brown-and-gold jersey. A high school friend from Wyoming turned him on to the program. He said he's been keeping a close eye on the Pokes ever since.

"The program at Wyoming is the best in the game," he said. "When I visited, I felt I had a good connection with the coaches."

Day is the second junior college player to ink with UW this offseason. Cornerback Tyrecus Davis also committed on the same day. Craig Bohl and Co. also signed two FBS transfers, Vanderbilt wide receiver Devin Boddie Jr. and Northern Illinois running back Harrison Waylee.

Don't expect these to be the last signings, either.

A source says a wide receiver will likely be in the mix by next weekend. Former Boise State wide out Jalen Richmond is the only known offer extended by UW.

Wyoming has lost eight players to the transfer portal since season's end: Joshua Cobbs (WR), Keonte Glinton (N), Zaire Jackson (CB), Omotosho (DE), Cam Stone (CB), Akili Bonner (DE), Joey Braasch (RB) and Tyrese Grant (WR). Running back Titus Swen, who was dismissed from the program for a violation of team rules following a Nov. 25 loss at Fresno State, briefly entered the portal before pulling his name out and entering the upcoming NFL Draft.
