I've always been amazed by athletes who push their bodies to the limit. Whether it's a runner struggling to finish the last mile of a marathon, a cyclist climbing a steep mountain pass or a triathlete crossing the finish line at Ironman, the will of these extraordinary competitors is remarkable.

This weekend, I accomplished a truly demanding physical feat. I finished the "Porkinator" sandwich at the 9th Annual Cheyenne Kiwanis Rib Fest.

I knew the challenge in front of me would be daunting when the staff at the Rasta Joe's rib stand rang a bell after I placed the order. Then I saw the gargantuan beast and truly realized that this challenge would test all of the fortitude I could muster.

First, I systematically devoured the several slices of ham, bacon and jack cheese that topped the gigantic mound of  meat. Then, I began the slow and painstaking process of consuming the one pound pile of pulled pork. I considered quitting several times during the trying ordeal.

At one point, after I had completed most of the massive sandwich, I hit the wall. Physical and mental fatigue had set in and I was sweating profusely. For a moment, I threw in my proverbial napkin and admitted defeat.

Then, I thought of Willis Reed's epic comeback from an injury in game 7 of the 1970 NBA Finals. I flashed back to Michael Jordan's legendary performance in 1997, overcoming flu-like symptoms to defeat the Utah Jazz. And I imagined how deeply disappointed my friends and family would be to learn that I had given up on a challenge I was so close to conquering.

Bravely, I soldiered on, slowly choking down the final few bites. With a sense of satisfaction, I proudly declared victory over the formidable foe, spiking my napkin on the table like a football in the end zone.

Exhausted, I could barely walk to the car. Eventually, I made it home and took a long nap, resting comfortably in the knowledge that I had left it all on the table this day, except for some sauce which ended up on my shirt. .
