When you go to the rodeo, you want to be entertained and get your whole family involved in the fun. Now, you're probably not going to throw your five-year-old onto the back of a buckin' bronc, or bull, but you'd sign on the dotted line when it comes to a sheep.

It's hard to say how many champion rodeo riders got their start as a rider in Mutton Bustin', but I'd say the number is higher than you think. One of the highlights of the Central Wyoming Fair and PRCA Rodeo is watching boys and girls of all skill levels compete each night of the rodeo.

If your kids are between the ages of 5 and 7, weigh less than 55 pounds, and are fearless, you should take them to Murdocks in Evansville to sign up to be an official Mutton Bustin contestant for the 2026 Fair and PRCA Rodeo.

Tuesday, June 30, is the cutoff date for getting registered, so swing in and sign up at Murdocks

If your child is a Mutton Bustin' rookie, there are a few things you need to know before the big day.

Essential gear to outfit your young rider includes:

  • Long Pants and Long Sleeve Shirts: Durable materials like denim or thick cotton will protect your child’s arms and legs from potential scrapes.
  • Boots or Sturdy Shoes: Proper footwear provides stability and grip while riding; flip flops or sandals are not suitable.
  • Protective Helmets: Safety is paramount, and a well-fitting bike or hockey helmet can help prevent head injuries during rides.

Preparing Your Child for Their First Mutton Bustin' Experience

Before the big day, it's important to prepare your child mentally and physically for the event. Practice basic balance and riding techniques using a stationary object, like a small barrel or padded bench, to mimic the sensation of riding an animal.

Safety First: Here are some foundational safety tips for every Mutton Bustin' participant

  • Wear the Right Gear: As reiterated, wearing long pants, sturdy shoes, long-sleeve shirts, and protective helmets is non-negotiable.
  • Weight and Age Restrictions: Adhere strictly to the event’s weight and age guidelines to ensure the safety of all children involved.
  • Pre-Event Checks: Always perform a pre-ride check to make sure the helmet and footwear are secure.

Sportsmanship

Encouraging your child to practice good sportsmanship plays a crucial role in their enjoyment and growth through Mutton Bustin'. Teach them to respect their peers, congratulate winners, and gracefully accept their own results, win or lose.
