Five Wyoming Golfers are at the 2023 PGA High School Golf National Invitational in Texas

The 2023 High School Golf National Invitational boys’ tournament began on Monday in Frisco, TX.

Five boys are representing Wyoming in this year’s field.

2022 Class 4A champion Josh Lane from Casper is playing as an individual. Class 3A state champion Riverton High School has four team members in the three-day event. They are Brodie Dale, Patrick Dornblaser, Kyler Graham, and Garrick McDonald.

On Monday, after the first 18 holes, the Wyoming contingent at the tournament was led by Lane. He shot a 4-over par round of 76 on the Fields Ranch West course. Lane was tied for 92nd. Dale was at 7-over par (79) and tied for 138th. He was followed by Graham at 14-over par (86) in a tie for 232nd, Dornblaser at 20-over par (92) in a tie for 279th, and McDonald was tied for 308th at 32-over par (104).

After the first round as a team, Riverton was 49th out of 50 in the standings at 73-over par. The team score was 361 on the Fields Ranch West course.

The second round has these golfers on the Fields Ranch East course.

There are 50 teams and 312 players in this year’s tournament field.

To qualify for this event, teams must win their respective state championship. They also must have an average stroke differential of 45.0 per round according to the NHSGA State Rankings to be eligible. An individual must meet similar standards. They must win their respective state championship to be eligible or have an average stroke differential of 6.0 per round according to the NHSGA State Rankings.

These golfers are playing the same three courses that the girls played last week at the new PGA Frisco campus in Texas. There is the Old American course, the Fields Ranch East course, and the Fields Ranch West course.

Sheridan’s Samantha Spielman placed in a tie for 18 at last week’s girls’ tournament. She finished at 14-over par or a three-day total of 229. The future Wyoming Cowgirl had rounds of 73, 77, and 79 on the three courses. Casper’s Haily Kalus (+38) tied for 95th. Green River’s Isabell Salas (+39) placed in a tie for 100th. Carli Kalus of Casper (+43) tied for 115th. Madison Griffin of Casper (+45) tied for 118th. Wheatland’s Lily Nichols (+66) tied for 160th, and Casper’s Sydney Van Houten (+123) finished in 193rd place. As a team, Casper Kelly Walsh placed 23rd out of 25 teams in the field.
