A 51-year-old Cheyenne man could face up to seven years in prison after police reportedly caught him with crack cocaine.

The Arrest

According to a booking sheet, police arrested John Ferrell in the 4900 block of King Arthur Way at 12:49 a.m. on New Year's Day following an incident involving a handgun.

The arresting officer says Ferrell had 1.24 grams of crack cocaine on him.

Ferrell was booked into the Laramie County Detention Center and subsequently charged with felony possession of crack cocaine, a crime punishable by up to seven years in prison, up to a $15,000 fine, or both; and reckless endangering with a firearm, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail.

Initial Court Appearance

On Tuesday, Jan. 6, Ferrell was seen in Laramie County Circuit Court in front of Judge Antoinette Williams on the charges.

Williams appointed Ferrell a public defender and set his preliminary hearing for Friday, Jan. 16, at 11 a.m.

Williams then asked for the state's position regarding bond.

"Both a felony amount of crack cocaine and the discharge of a firearm at the same time; the state would recommend a $5,000 cash bond," the state said. "There is no history the state can see actually in the NCIC."

Out on Bond

Williams set Ferrell's bond at $5,000 cash, which was later posted.

Please remember that all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
