Cheyenne Meteorologist Says Area Is Getting Smoke From Elk Fire
Cheyenne-based Meteorologist Don Day Jr. says the smoke being seen in the Cheyenne area today [Sept. 30] is primarily coming from the Elk Fire raging in the Bighorn Mountains.
Day is the President and Founder of Dayweather Inc. in Cheyenne.
The Elk Fire Is Raging In The Bighorns
The Elk Fire at last report had scorched 22,410 acres and forced evacuations in the area according to watchduty.org. Townsquare Media's Glenn Woods, in an article about the fire, quoted a Facebook post: ''The Elk Fire in the Bighorn Mountains exploded into a raging monster today, driven by 40-50+ mph winds. (Tom Doolin - Facebook Post)."
The Sheridan Press reported that the blaze had forced the closure of Tongue River High School on Monday as well as numerous travel restrictions and evacuations.
Watch Duty as of early Monday afternoon listed the Elk Fire as "active" and did not list any percentage of containment on the Elk Fire.
