Cheyenne School District Trustees Release Draft Gun Policy
The Laramie County School District#1 Board of Trustees has released a draft policy response to the Wyoming Gun Free Zones repeal passed by the legislature earlier this year.
That law allows people with concealed carry permits to carry guns on school grounds in Wyoming. For most other areas covered by the law a concealed carry permit is not required to carry a gun. But due to federal law the state has to require the permits on school property.

The state law does let school boards impose special rules for school employees or volunteers to carry firearms.
You can read the draft policy here.
The public can comment on the proposed rule through June 20. People can comment here or by emailing rebecca.gill@laramie1.org.
Because Freedom Elementary School on F.E. Warren Air Force Base is on federal land leased from the Department of the Air Force, it is exempt from the gun free zones repeal law.
Provisions Of The Proposed Policy
Among other provisions of the proposed policy:
-weapons must be concealed. Open carry of firearms will not be allowed
-district employees and volunteers with concealed carry permits will be allowed to carry firearms if they receive prescribed training, including at least 16 hours of live fire handgun training. They also will need to complete at least eight hours of scenario training.
-the school board will have the option of waiving the training for teachers and staff at the district's rural schools, due to the fact that law enforcement may take longer to reach those schools in an emergency.
-a gun may only be fired on school property if the person firing the gun has a legitimate reason to think they or someone else may be endangered.
-students are not authorized to carry guns in school.
