A 26-year-old Cheyenne woman is facing drug possession charges after Wyoming Highway Patrol troopers reportedly found 22 grams worth of fentanyl and gabapentin pills in her purse.

According to a booking sheet, Riley J. Sams was arrested on July 22, 2024, after a trooper stopped the vehicle she was riding in at the Sinclair at 115 N. Greeley Hwy. for having no registration.

The trooper says the driver, Ross Maez, and front passenger, Alexis McCafferty, who was not wearing her seat belt, tried to exit the vehicle, and when he approached the vehicle and asked Maez for his driver's license, Maez said he didn't have it.

The trooper then asked McCafferty and Sams, who was sitting in the back seat, if they had valid driver's licenses.

The trooper says Sams handed him her Missouri driver's license and McCafferty told him she didn't have hers.

Wyoming Highway Patrol K-9 Sniffs Out 22 Grams Worth of Fentanyl and Gabapentin Pills

While the trooper was gathering information on the trio and the vehicle, another trooper ran his K-9 partner around the vehicle for a free air sniff, and the dog gave a positive alert.

When the trooper searched the vehicle, he reportedly found a purse in the back seat area where Sams was sitting containing Sams' credit and debit cards, a baggy with approximately 30 to 40 blue fentanyl pills, and a baggy with gabapentin pills, an anticonvulsant and nerve pain medication.

The weight of the fentanyl pills was four grams and the weight of the gabapentin pills was 18 grams.

Sams was booked into the Laramie County Detention Center without injury or incident and subsequently charged with felony possession of a Schedule I or II drug and misdemeanor possession of a Schedule V drug.

She made her initial appearance in Laramie County Circuit Court on Tuesday morning, during which her bond was set at $2,500 cash and her preliminary hearing was scheduled for Aug. 1, 2024, at 1:30 p.m.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
