Several incumbent Laramie County office holders filed to run again on Thursday, the first official day for candidate filings for the 2026 election.

Laramie County Sheriff Brian Kozak officially filed with the Laramie County Clerk's office fo9r a second term. Kozak served as Police Chief of Cheyenne for over a decade. When Patrick Collins was elected as mayor in 2020 he decided not to retain Kozak as Chief. But Kozak ran for Sheriff in 2022 and was elected to the position, defeating independent candidate Jeff Barnes and Democrat Jess Fresquez in the general election.

Troy Thompson, a local veterinarian, has served on the Laramie County Commission since 2010. He is currently Vice-Chair of the county's governing body. He was one of three Republicans elected to the commission in 2022, joining Gunnar Malm and Linda Heath. Both Heath and Malm have said they are running again. although neither filed as candidates on Thursday.

Candidates have until May 29 to file.

Other Candidates Filing On Thursday

Challenger Steven Wilson also filed for the county commission on Thursday, the only non-incumbent to file for county office on the first day of the filing period.

Other Laramie County Incumbents who filed to run again on Thursday included County Assessor Todd Ernst, District Attorney Sylvia Hackl and Clerk of District Court Diane Sanchez, all of whom won election to those offices in 2022.
