As of 3:40 p.m., Black Hills Energy was dealing with 114 power outages affecting over 7,000people.

That's according to the Black Hills Energy outages website.

Crews have been busy all day dealing with downed power lines, with extra crews deployed for the wind emergency, according to company spokeswoman Laurie Farkas.. Cheyenne Regional Airport recorded the strongest wind gust in three decades. That's according to a post on the Cheyenne National Weather Service Facebook page Kara Gillespie

The Cheyenne Airport sensor reached 90 mph with this windstorm, which is the highest recorded at this station since reasonable wind data have been tracked (early-mid 1990s). Nearly our entire forecast area has gusted to at least 60 mph this morning with damage reports trickling in. If you have an impact from the storm, feel free to share here with your location - direction & distance to nearest town.

Meanwhile, it looks like we can expect more wind through Friday, although the velocity may decline somewhat:

Early on Thursday afternoon, Cheyenne police activated their accident alert system:

Due to the pending dust storm, the Cheyenne Police Department will be on accident alert.
This means if you are involved non-injury, non-alcohol or drug related crash, please exchange information.
Please remember to slow down and stay alert while traveling on the road.

Important Safety Rules For Power Outages

Farkas reminds people of the safety precautions they should follow when dealing with power outages:
Stay safe: • Assume any downed power line is energized. Stay away and call 911. • Unplug sensitive computer and electronic equipment or protect them with a highquality surge protector. • Leave a lamp or electric radio on so you know when service is restored. • Do not open your refrigerator or freezer more than necessary. Undisturbed food will remain frozen in most freezers for 12 to 48 hours. How to stay informed: • Sign up for alerts and keep your contact information up to date so we can provide safety and outage notifications.
