Let’s End the ‘Merry Christmas’ vs. ‘Happy Holidays’ Debate [OPINION]
Around this time every year, a debate seems to arise about the validity of the phrase "Merry Christmas" vs. "Happy Holidays", and one local business' take divided the Laramie community last year, even making headlines in Grand Junction, Colorado. Starbucks seems to find themselves under fire every year for their holiday cup designs, whether they're "Christmas-y" or not. I see this debate play out every year on my Facebook timeline, and every year I have the same response:
I. Don't. Care.
Although I've celebrated Christmas my entire life, I will never take offense to anyone who says "Happy Holidays" to me. For that matter, I don't care whether anyone wishes me a Happy Hannukah, a Happy Kwanzaa, or for those that don't celebrate holidays to simply say "have a great day". What matters to me is that these individuals are taking time out of their day to wish me well, and I appreciate that. I actually think the world could use more kindness.
So, in the spirit of the holiday season, I ask that everyone put their differences aside and just say "thank you", or to wish the other person a happy whatever it is you do (or don't) celebrate. And remember,
