Pot smokers in Laramie and Cheyenne are now within driving distance of several recreation marijuana dispensaries. But how has legalization in Colorado influenced the so-called "weed culture" in central and northern Wyoming?

According to the website webehigh.org, which documents the enforcement of marijuana laws in cities all over the world, pot can still be hard to find in most parts of the Cowboy State.

The site lists two Wyoming towns, Thermopolis and Cody. Their "smoking tolerance level" is ranked on a scale from 1 to 5; one for strict enforcement and five for lenient enforcement.

In Thermopolis, the tolerance level falls at 2.1, making it difficult, expensive and risky for pot smokers. In Cody, the tolerance level is right down the middle at 2.5.

"In Cody, the police are very serious about cracking down on marijuana in large part because there is a correlation between marijuana use and dealing and methamphetamine use and dealing," the site reports.

Although attitudes regarding marijuana use may be slowly changing, the legal penalities for possession in Wyoming are tough.

"Possesion of less than three ounces is a misdemeanor that can result in up to a year in jail and a $1000 fine. Just being under the influence can put you in jail for up to 90 days and $100 fine. Having more than three ounces is a felony that results in up to five years of jail and $10,000. Overall though, the laws are more strict than they are actually enforced. Must judges will not send you to jail just for possesion of small quantities or being under the influence, but they can if they want," the site cautions.
