Officials are trying to determine how a "significant amount" of mercury ended up on a street and sidewalk in south Cheyenne.

Cheyenne Fire Rescue spokesman Scott Smith says crews were called to a mercury spill near the intersection of W. 5th Street and Thomes Avenue at 2:17 p.m. Monday.

"Crews worked to mitigate the issue until additional resources arrive on scene Tuesday morning," said Smith.  "The area has been closed to the public."

Smith says no homes were evacuated and no injuries were reported.  He didn't know where the mercury came from or if any got into Crow Creek.
