NFL 2012 Season — Week Four Recap
The New York Giants missed a chance to secure a divisional win, while Arizona and Atlanta each needed late field goals to remain unbeaten. Here’s a recap of all of Sunday’s action:
Philadelphia 19 — N.Y. Giants 17
Lawrence Tynes missed a 54-yard field goal with just 15 seconds remaining, and the Philadelphia Eagles beat the New York Giants, 19-17, in Philadelphia on Sunday night. Trailing 17-16, quarterback Michael Vick and running back LeSean McCoy guided the Eagles into position for Alex Henery’s go-ahead, 26-yard field goal with 1:49 left to play. New York (2-2) has now lost eight of its last nine meetings with Philadelphia (3-1).
McCoy had 123 yards rushing for the Eagles, and teammate DeSean Jackson had six catches for 99 yards and a score. Eli Manning passed for 309 yards, two touchdowns and a costly interception for the Giants. Receiver Domenik Hixon caught six passes for 114 yards for New York, while teammate Victor Cruz had nine catches for 109 yards and a score.
Green Bay 28 — New Orleans 27
Aaron Rodgers tossed an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jordy Nelson with 7 minutes to play, and the Green Bay Packers beat the New Orleans Saints, 28-27, in Green Bay on Sunday. Saints’ kicker Garrett Hartley missed a 48-yard field goal attempt with under three minutes remaining, securing the win for Green Bay (2-2). Rodgers passed for 319 yards, four touchdowns and an interception for the Packers. New Orleans (0-4) was led by quarterback Drew Brees, who threw for 446 yards and three touchdowns. Saints’ receiver Marques Colston caught nine passes for 153 yards and a score.
Atlanta 30 — Carolina 28
Matt Bryant kicked a 40-yard field goal with 5 seconds to play, and the Atlanta Falcons beat the Carolina Panthers, 30-28, in Atlanta on Sunday. Quarterback Matt Ryan passed for 369 yards, three touchdowns and an interception for Atlanta (4-0), while teammate Roddy White caught eight passes for 169 yards and two scores. Falcons’ running back Michael Turner added 103 yards rushing on 13 carries and a touchdown catch. Quarterback Cam Newton threw for 215 yards and two touchdowns, while he ran for 86 yards and another score for Carolina (1-3).
Washington 24 — Tampa Bay 22
Billy Cundiff kicked a 41-yard field goal with 3 seconds to play, as the Washington Redskins beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 24-22, in Tampa on Sunday. Cundiff had missed three earlier attempts before connecting on the game-winner. Quarterback Robert Griffin III completed 26 of 35 passes for 323 yards and engineered the final drive for Washington (2-2). Alfred Morris added 113 yards rushing and a touchdown on 21 carries for the Redskins. Josh Freeman passed for 299 yards, a touchdown and an interception for Tampa Bay (1-3), while Buccaneers’ teammate Mike Williams caught four passes for 115 yards. Vincent Jackson added six receptions for 100 yards and a score for Tampa.
Arizona 24 — Miami 21 (OT)
Jay Feely kicked a 46-yard field goal in overtime, as the Arizona Cardinals beat the Miami Dolphins, 24-21, in Arizona on Sunday. Arizona (4-0) forced the overtime period when quarterback Kevin Kolb threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Andre Roberts with 22 seconds remaining in regulation. Kolb finished with 324 yards passing, three touchdowns and two interceptions, despite being sacked eight times. Roberts had six catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns. Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill passed for 431 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions for Miami (1-3), while Dolphins’ receiver Brian Hartline set a team record with 253 yards receiving on 12 catches. Davone Bess added seven receptions for 123 yards for Miami.
Minnesota 20 — Detroit 13
Thanks to both a kickoff and punt return for a touchdown, the Minnesota Vikings beat the Detroit Lions, 20-13, in Detroit on Sunday. Percy Harvin returned the opening kickoff 105 yards for a score, while teammate Marcus Sherels later returned a punt for a touchdown for Minnesota (3-1). Matthew Stafford passed for 319 yards for Detroit (1-3). Vikings’ running back Adrian Peterson carried 21 times for 102 yards.
St. Louis 19 — Seattle 13
Greg Zuerlein kicked four field goals, as the St. Louis Rams beat the Seattle Seahawks, 19-13, in St. Louis on Sunday. St. Louis (2-2) scored all of its points off special teams, as punter Johnny Hekker’s 2-yard pass to Danny Amendola on a fake field goal provided the Rams their only touchdown of the game. Marshawn Lynch had 118 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown for Seattle (2-2). Seahawks’ quarterback Russell Wilson passed for just 160 yards and three interceptions.
San Francisco 34 — N.Y. Jets 0
Carlos Rogers returned a fumble 51 yards for a touchdown, and the San Francisco 49ers beat the New York Jets, 34-0, in East Rutherford, NJ on Sunday. San Francisco (3-1) rolled up 245 rushing yards, including 62 yards and a touchdown from Frank Gore. New York (2-2) was able to do little on offense, as quarterback Mark Sanchez threw for just 103 yards and an interception.
New England 52 — Buffalo 28
New England scored on six consecutive second-half touchdown drives, and the Patriots beat the Buffalo Bills, 52-28, in Orchard Park, NY on Sunday. Quarterback Tom Brady completed 22 of 36 passes for 340 yards and three touchdowns, while his 4-yard run tied the game at 21 late in the third quarter for New England (2-2). Ryan Fitzpatrick completed 22 of 39 passes for 350 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions for Buffalo (2-2). Brandon Bolden carried 16 times for 137 yards and a score for the Patriots, while teammate Stevan Ridley had 106 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Wes Welker caught nine passes for 129 receiving yards for New England. Rob Gronkowski had five catches for 104 yards and a score for the Patriots.
Houston 38 — Tennessee 14
Both Danieal Manning and Kareem Jackson turned interception returns into touchdowns, as the Houston Texans beat the Tennessee Titans, 38-14, in Houston on Sunday. Arian Foster ran for 86 yards and a touchdown for Houston (4-0). Tennessee (1-3) was limited on offense, as starting quarterback Jake Locker left the game in the first quarter after hurting his left, non-throwing shoulder. Titans’ running back Chris Johnson carried 25 times for 141 yards, but that wasn’t enough to offset the picks thrown by Tennessee’s Matt Hasselbeck in relief of Locker.
Denver 37 — Oakland 6
Peyton Manning threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns, as the Denver Broncos routed the Oakland Raiders, 37-6, in Denver on Sunday. The Broncos scored on an 80-yard touchdown drive to open the game and the Raiders never seriously threatened. Willis McGahee ran for 112 yards and a score for Denver (2-2). Broncos’ receiver Demaryius Thomas had five receptions for 103 yards. Carson Palmer led Oakland (1-3) with 202 passing yards, but Raiders’ running back Darren McFadden had just 34 yards on 13 carries.
Cincinnati 27 — Jacksonville 10
Andy Dalton passed for 244 yards and two touchdowns, and the Cincinnati Bengals beat the Jacksonville Jaguars, 27-10, in Jacksonville on Sunday. Dalton added another score via a 1-yard run for Cincinnati (3-1). Bengals’ receiver A.J. Green had six catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. Jacksonville (1-3) saw quarterback Blaine Gabbert get sacked six times, as he completed 23 of 34 passes for 186 yards, with a touchdown and an interception.
San Diego 37 — Kansas City 20
Philip Rivers passed for 209 yards and two touchdowns, and the San Diego Chargers beat the turnover-prone Kansas City Chiefs, 37-20, in Kansas City on Sunday. San Diego (3-1) capitalized on five Chiefs’ turnovers to take a 27-6 halftime lead. Chargers’ running back Jackie Battle had two touchdowns. Matt Cassel threw for 251 yards, two touchdowns and three costly interceptions for Kansas City (1-3). Chiefs’ running back Jamaal Charles had 92 yards on 17 carries and a touchdown rushing and receiving, but he fumbled twice. Dwayne Bowe had seven catches for 108 yards and a touchdown for Kansas City.
