One of the most elusive creatures in the Cowboy State was caught on camera last week at the Louis Lake Lodge in the Wind River Mountain Range near Lander.

Wyoming Game and Fish Department shared the photo, captured by Louis Lake Lodge owner Steve Faerber on his trail camera, showing an adult wolverine foraging near the main cabin in the Shoshone National Forest. Wolverines live in remote high elevation wilderness areas and are rarely seen in the wild. A 2017 study documented only three Wolverines in the Wind River Range.

Built in 1939, the rustic Lodge is perched at an elevation of 9,603 feet 28 miles southwest of Lander and is only accessible during the summer months via Loop Road. While it is common to see moose, elk, and even bears in the area, this is the first time a Wolverine has been spotted at the resort.

The resort is a popular destination for weddings and family reunions, attracting visitors with its sandy beach and pristine alpine water. It was also the setting for the 2012 slasher film Louis Lake.
