Cheyenne police are doing a survey on whether officers should be allowed to sport groomed beards and colored fingernails.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says under the department's current grooming policy, officers are only allowed to have mustaches and wear clear nail polish.

"For the last three months, (we've) had an exemption to that rule for people who were making donations to local charities," said Malatesta.

"We're putting a poll up on our Facebook page to generate some community feedback and kind of see what Cheyenne feels, if they think it's an acceptable thing for an officer to have a groomed beard or not," he added.

The department loosened its tattoo policy last year, allowing officers to show their tattoos while on duty.
