Stock:Students Share Credit For Bullying Decrease
Laramie County School District#1 Superintendent Mark Stock says some of the credit for decreases in bullying behavior goes to the students themselves.
A survey of student involvement in bullying, whether as the victim, the bully or both shows across the board decreases. That includes both boys and girls, all grade levels and all types of bullying. Stock notes the Olweus anti-bullying program the district began implementing a couple of years ago works towards a "culture change" in student attitudes on bullying as well as how they respond to it. He says the district is asking students to take a leadership role in preventing bullying and reacting to it when it does happen.
The survey found most types of bullying have decreased in the 40 to 45 percent range since 2012. Stock says that while the district is very pleased with those results "there is still room for improvement".
