Vince McMahon announces the XFL will try again. How many years ago did it last a year (16 years). But we remember two guys from Wyoming who played in that league.

From Cheyenne East High School, Troy would have a long pro career, but first there were four years in college on a team that played like professionals. Just making the Nebraska Cornhusker’s roster at safety was impressive in the late 1980s. Troy totaled 131 tackles there and made four trips to the Orange Bowl.

In 1995, Dumas would be drafted in the third round by the Kansas City Chiefs. We could say his career was more successful than who the Cincinnati Bengals picked #1 of that class - Ki-jana Carter. Troy lost his rookie year to a pre-season knee injury. The next year he played in six games on special teams. In 1997 he was in eight games before being waived by K.C. Dumas was picked up by the St. Louis Rams, who used him in two games to finish the season and then waived him.

Troy was out of pro football until 2000. He tried out, and made the Orlando Predators Arena Football League team. In 2001, he joined the Las Vegas Outlaws of the XFL for its one year.

Outlaws coach Jim Criner’s critique of Dumas was a good one:

Troy had one of the most impressive workouts I have seen in 35 years of coaching. He is an impressive physical specimen with extensive NFL experience … and moves like a deer...

Troy got into coaching, himself, as an assistant at Cheyenne Central High until landing as defensive coordinator at Doane University, a private liberal arts college in Nebraska. In early 2008, he joined the staff at Southeast Missouri State as linebacker coach. That same year, he also earned an NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Steve is from Colorado Springs, but in college played only in brown and gold, starting all 47 games. As an offensive tackle, at 6’3”, 278 pounds, his quarterback was sacked four times in four years (Whoah). In Steve’s senior season, the 1996 Pokes led the nation in offense part of that year. The finalist for the Outland Trophy went 83rd overall in the 1997 draft to the Dallas Cowboys, then on to the Panthers, Dolphins, Saints and Rams before a second stint in Dallas, but was released before the regular season.

Not ready to quit, Scifres went to Scotland to play in NFL Europe. In 2001 when the XFL came along, he signed with the San Francisco Demons and started every game of that one season.

He would play arena football until 2005, and became a member of Wyoming Athletics Hall of Fame class of 2008.
