WATCH: Former Wyoming standout Logan Wilson boots 40-plus yard field goal

LARAMIE -- If you have followed Logan Wilson's career, you would know that this isn't exactly breaking news.

Reporters and fans captured this video Monday afternoon of the former Wyoming standout booting field goals from 40-plus yards out in practice. The current Cincinnati Bengals linebacker most likely won't ever be asked to do this in a game situation. After all, the defending AFC Champions have one of the top kickers in the NFL in Evan McPherson.

It sure is a nice back-up plan though.

During his days at Natrona County High School in Casper, Wilson did it all.

He was a standout defensive back and wide receiver. He also served as the Mustangs' punter and placekicker. How good of a prep kicker was Wilson? Colorado State, Wyoming's Border War rival, recruited him to play the position.

They should've tried harder.

He never lost to the Rams in four tries.

When it comes to Wilson and field-goal kicking, it's impossible not to think back to the 2013 4A State Championship game inside Laramie's War Memorial Stadium. Trailing 14-13 against Cheyenne East with 1:18 to go, the Mustangs lined up for a 36-yard attempt that would've likely sealed the deal.

Wilson had the distance but hooked it to the left.

NCHS head coach Steve Harshman said at the time, that kick could've been good if it was sailing toward high school regulation goal posts, which are five feet wider.

Fast forward six years.

Wyoming's all-time leading scorer Cooper Rothe faced a similar situation. Trailing Boise State 20-17 in overtime, Rothe's 37-yard attempt came up short, harmlessly falling to the blue turf and sending Albertsons Stadium into a frenzy.

A player who could put that in perspective is Wilson.

"I lost the state championship my junior year on one," he said postgame. "It's tough. It sucks."

Wilson is entering his third season with the Bengals after being selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. All he has done since his arrival in the Queen City is tally 133 tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble. Oh, and he has also picked off six passes, including a team-high four while leading Cincy to the Super Bowl last winter.
