When Is The Typical First Snowfall in Cheyenne?

With a few scattered snowflakes being seen in Cheyenne yesterday and again today, we started to wonder--what is the typical date for the first autumn snowfall in Cheyenne?

October 7 is the average first snowfall in Wyoming's Capital City. That's according to the Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service. You can read more about Cheyenne's typical first snow here.

So far this year, accumulating snow was recorded in northern Wyoming on Sept. 9. While that didn't happen in Cheyenne, its fairly typical in Wyoming according to the National Weather Service:

Snow falls frequently across Wyoming from October through May, with snow beginning as early as late September across the lower elevations. About five times a year on the average, stations at the lower elevations will have snowfall exceeding five inches."

It's also worth noting that snowfall in late June is not unheard of. Yellowstone National Park has recorded snowfall as late as June 23 on two different occasions--in 1993 and 1906. it snowed in the park on June 22 as recently as 2019.
