The Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office is urging car owners to always get a written estimate on car repair and towing fees.

According to the National Highway Traffic Saftey Administration, auto repair scams, including such things as towing and impound fees, make up the largest group of consumer complaints across the country.

The scams cost Americans tens of billions of dollars each year. The sheriff's office says car owners can protect themselves by always getting estimates in writing rather than relying on vague and often unprovable verbal statements.

The agency says putting it in writing "represents an agreement, shows professionalism, provides tangible proof in the event of a dispute, and allows you to compare prices between service providers."
