Wyoming Walk-On Marcus Epps One Win Away From Super Bowl

LARAMIE -- From walk-on to the NFL's biggest stage.

That can be part of Marcus Epps' narrative if the top-seeded Eagles can get past San Francisco Sunday afternoon inside Lincoln Financial Field.

Epps is one of the three former Wyoming players still alive in these playoffs, joining Cincinnati linebacker Logan Wilson and fellow safety Tashaun Gipson, who will be on the opposite sideline in Philadelphia.

The 6-foot, 198-pound Los Angeles product came to Laramie in 2014, the same season Craig Bohl took over the Cowboys football program. The Edison High graduate redshirted during that first season and quickly rose through the ranks, appearing in all 11 games the following campaign.

Epps, along with Andrew Wingard, became one of the best safety tandems in the country. Lining up at free safety, Epps tallied 324 total tackles out of the UW secondary during his three-year playing career. He also picked off nine passes, including four during the 2017 season. Epps forced five fumbles and recovered four others.

Minnesota obviously liked what they saw.

The Vikings' brass took a chance on Epps in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He played just eight games in the Twin Cities before being shipped off to the City of Brotherly Love. There, Epps has found a home.

Playing sparingly his first two seasons, Epps took over as a starter in 2021, racking up 62 tackles and snagging an interception in 16 games. This last fall, those tackle numbers vaulted to 94. He also broke up a career-high six passes as the Eagles cruised to a 14-3 regular-season record.

In last week's 38-7 rout of the rival Giants in the divisional round, Epps tallied five stops. Sunday, he will have his hands full with Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and George Kittle.
