With the Cheyenne Home and Garden Show just around the corner, our Townsquare Media DJ's have been asked to write about our own remodeling experiences.  I am currently going through a big basement remodel and I've learned that the old cliche is true, "good work isn't cheap and cheap work isn't good".

Years ago, I was involved in a kitchen and bath remodel where we relied on friends, friends of friends and cheap handymen.  It was a nightmare.  The project ran way over time and budget.  And then, we had to hire a real professional to fix the mistakes that the cheap guys made.

This time around, we're remodeling the basement and decided to hire a local contractor who knows what he's doing.  It's costing us a small fortune.  However, instead of tackling one major project, we're saving up and doing a little bit at a time. Our first step was to completely gut the bathroom and add a bigger shower.

We've decided to go with dark gray tile on the bathroom floor, with dark grout that's easy to clean.  We'll run the same tiles vertically in the shower, with a decorative back splash.   And then, we're installing a rustic vanity with industrial lights, to match the character of our home, which was built in the 1940's.

It's a work in progress, but it's moving along. When the bathroom is finished, we plan to add new framing, insulation and carpet to a guest bedroom in the basement.  Eventually, we will turn the large open space into an extra living area with a bar and ping pong table.

This is where our basement bar will be. It might take a year or two, but we're going to give it a rustic, prohibition era theme.
