Back in 1977, Johnny Carson and guest trumpeter Doc Severinsen, had a dialogue running on The Tonight Show. They read letters from grade school children explaining how they would prepare a Thanksgiving dinner.

Here are 5 letters, submitted by school teachers, explaining how kids would prepare and cook the holiday bird, as they understood it. WARNING: For various reasons, I would suggest you do not follow their recipes, but get a laugh anyway.

  1. "First you soak it in cold water, then I don't know what you do with it." - Scott D.
  2. "Go to a turkey shoot, and shoot a turkey and bring him home. Take the feathers off, then cook him on the stove for a "couple of whiles"  - then eat him." - Tim
  3. "Put stuffing in it, salt and pepper and cover in foil. Put it in the oven for about 10 minutes. I like the meat best" (No bones or feathers for this kid) - Becky
  4. "The store man shoots a turkey. The put it in the stove. Then mommy buys it, puts it in water for 10 minutes and then cooks it for 20 minutes." - Robin
  5. "Put "stuff" in the turkey. Then put it in a big pot for 100 hours." - Jeff

It might be fun to ask your kids the best way to prepare and cook a turkey. Since kids say the darndest things, you might get a chuckle from your own offspring.
