Cheyenne Regional Medical Center Emergency Management Coordinator Candis Pickard says Cheyenne residents went out of their way to help victims of a devastating crash on Interstate 80 this week.

Pickard says that includes both CRMC employees as well as the general public. She says the hospital was overwhelmed with donations of clothing, gift cards, eyeglasses and other items. Many others simply called the hospital to see what they could do to help.

She says CRMC personnel also went above and beyond the call of duty. She cites the example of a couple of Russian crash victims who speak little or no English.

While it's fairly uncommon to find someone who speaks Russian in Wyoming, a pair of doctors who are fluent in the language volunteered to come in on their day off so those patients could speak with someone about their injuries and other concerns.

Pickard says she's "absolutely not" surprised about the outpouring of generosity. ''I've lived here 35 years, and this is just the kind of people we are" she says. ''People care for each other, but they also care for the strangers who come through".

She says about 25 people were treated for injuries, but when everyone who was left stranded is factored in about 50-60 people were affected. Pickard says so far as she knows no crash victims are still hospitalized at CRMC.

The crash 18 miles west of Laramie claimed two lives and closed the interstate for several hours on Monday and into Tuesday.
