Bold Prediction: Brandon Nimmo Will Be An MLB All-Star In 2019
Everyone loves an underdog. Which explains why Brandon Nimmo has become a fan favorite in New York. Along with Cy Young winner Jacob DeGrom, the small-town kid from Wyoming is arguably the most popular player on the Mets.
Don't be surprised if he's an All-Star in 2019.
Last year, Nimmo's .404 on-base percentage ranked second in the National League and fourth in MLB. His 4.4 wins above replacement (WAR) ranked 10th in the National League, his 5.1 offensive WAR ranked fifth. His combined on-base and slugging percentage (OPS) was .887, well above the major league average of .728 and just outside the top ten in the NL. His adjusted OPS+ of 150 ranked second behind NL MVP Christian Yelich. His 36 adjusted batting runs ranked fifth in the NL. He was hit by 22 pitches, more than any other player in MLB. Nimmo also slugged 17 home runs and drove in 47 RBI.
Now entering his fourth big-league season, Nimmo is projected to put up similar numbers in 2019. One site predicts he will hit 19 home runs, drive in 57 RBI, and draw 83 walks. If he can match those numbers, expect to see Nimmo on the field at the 2019 MLB All-Star Game in July.
Nimmo will return to the Front Range September 16th through 18th when the Colorado Rockies host the Mets for a three-game series at Coors Field. Last year, Nimmo put on an epic show for friends and family against the team he grew up cheering for, leading off with an inside-the-park home run and adding another home run in the seventh to finish 4-for-6 with four RBI. After the game, Nimmo told reporters it was his first inside-the-park home run since playing for Cheyenne American Legion Post Six in high school.
