The Broadway Fire burning in southern Carbon County, reported at 322 acres in size Tuesday night, has since expanded to over 700 acres, according to fire managers.

Strong winds pushed the fire across Forest Road 496 Tuesday afternoon and started several small spot fires within 100 feet of the road. Helicopters were used to hit several spot fires north of the fire.

The rapid fire growth forced firefighters and equipment working on the west side of the fire to pull back as a precaution.

Fire managers say more accurate mapping of the blaze will be completed with an infrared flight Wednesday night.

Conditions remained warm and dry Wednesday, with winds forecast to pick up again on Thursday. Any chance of precipitation isn't expected to increase until later in the week.

The blaze is not predicted to be contained until October 21.

A public meeting is scheduled for Thursday in Encampment's community Opera House from 7-8 p.m. Fire managers will address recent activity on the Broadway and Beaver Creek fires, as well as closures and hunting impacts and what to expect next.
