The average American driver spends around $1,000 a year for car insurance. Luckily, Wyoming has one of the lowest rates in the country. A new study claims the Cowboy State has the fourth-cheapest car insurance.

Only Iowa, Vermont, and Nebraska had lower insurance rates than Wyoming. South Dakota rounded out the five cheapest states, followed by Montana in sixth place. Insurance rates are considerably higher in Utah and Colorado, who ranked 26th and 27th respectively. New York is the most expensive state followed by Florida, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Lousiana.

The study cites three primary reasons for cheaper rates in the Cowboy State. Wyoming only requires drivers to carry liability insurance and has fewer regulations for insurance providers. Wyoming also has one of the lowest traffic density rates in the country, which places drivers at a lower risk for accidents.

Progressive is the most popular car insurance provider in the state, according to the study, followed by State Farm, Bristol West, Geico, and The General.
