A shooting in eastern Sweetwater County Monday afternoon turned out to be self-inflicted, according to Sweetwater County Sheriff Mike Lowell.

The victim, identified only as a 54-year-old Sweetwater County man, told a sheriff's deputy in Wamsutter a little before 3 p.m. Monday that he had been shot. He was rushed to a Rawlins hospital, where he admitted to Rawlins Police Officers that he had shot himself with a pistol along Interstate 80 west of Wamsutter.

He then drove back to Wamsutter where he ran into the deputy and asked for help.

The man was later flown to Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, where his condition was unknown as of Monday evening.

Sheriff Lowell said it was a good thing investigators quickly discovered the shooting was self-inflicted so that people wouldn't think an active shooter was attacking victims.
