Watch Cheyenne Native Bryce Meredith Beat Top Ranked Wrestler [VIDEOS]
Cheyenne native and University of Wyoming wrestler Bryce Meredith will soon be the top ranked wrestler in the nation at the 141 lb weight class.
Meredith ranked second in the nation in his class, but that was before last night at Cheyenne's Storey Gymnasium.
Meredith and the Pokes hosted national powerhouse Oklahoma State in a duel. That matched up Bryce against his greatest challenge and rival, Dean Heil. Heil beat Meredith in the 2015 national championship. Dean also beat Mereith three other times in the last two years. He had a 55 match winning streak and ranked number one in the 141 lb class. But, that was before last night...
Bryce had the opportunity to wrestle in front of his hometown as the University of Wyoming moved the match from Laramie to Cheyenne. In front of a packed house full of brown and gold, Meredith and Heil went to a double overtime. Bryce escaped and held off a couple shot attempts from Dean in the final 30 seconds to get a 2-1 victory.
The 20th ranked Wyoming squad ultimately fell to #3 Oklahoma State 20-15 in front of over 2,500 fans. Wyoming wrestling gets a break over Christmas and returns to action at North Carolina in Chapel Hill January 5th. They next home duel is against Cal State Bakersfield Friday, January 12th.
After the match Bryce said..
Overall it was great, it was so awesome, it was electric. I wish I could just stay out there and soak it in more. I'll never get anything like this in my life again. It's a great feeling.
Check out a couple different angles from the match, one of which was recorded by Cheyenne resident Leigh Anne Manlove, below. There's also a post-match interview with Bryce from USA Wrestling.
