World’s Largest Steam Locomotive ‘Big Boy’ to Kickoff 2022 Tour in Cheyenne
The world's largest steam locomotive has been resting up in Cheyenne at Union Pacific's steam shop, but 'Union Pacific's Big Boy No.4014' will be making its way back on the tracks to kick off its 2022 West Coast Steam Tour this summer and of course, the tour kicks off in Wyoming's capital city..
Union Pacific Historical Society announced today (April 11th) on their Facebook page that the West Coast Steam Tour will be celebrating Union Pacific's 160th anniversary. The tour will leave from Cheyenne on June 26th.
As noted in the Facebook post from Union Pacific Historical Society, the world's largest steam locomotive will be on display in four cities:
- July 6 - Sparks, NV
- July 8-9 - Roseville, CA
- July 15-16 - Portland, OR
- July 21-22 - Boise ID
At those displays, known as 'Experience the Union Pacific Rail Car', there will be a live Q&A session with the Steam Crew for those that visit the display. They will also get to learn the history of 'Big Boy 4014', as well as a story of modern-day railroading throughout the mult-media walkthrough exhibition of the display.
After the trip starts up in Cheyenne, it will travel west through the rest of Wyoming, into Utah, Nevada, California, then head north into western Oregon before heading into Idaho. Then it's back down into northern Utah before a return to Cheyenne, WY.
Union Pacific's Big Boy No. 4014 remains the only operational locomotive of its kind. The 'Big Boy' steam locomotive had been restored in Cheyenne in 2019 in preparation for the 'Great Race' tours during the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad's completion.
More details of the upcoming West Coast Steam Tour will be released next month.
