Several Academy Award-winning movies have been made in the Cowboy State. Starship Troopers is not one of them, but it was filmed here. This month, Wyoming's weirdest flick turns 20.

The futuristic sci-fi thriller, which featured hundreds of extras from Casper and Cheyenne, was released on November 7, 1997, and grossed over $120 million worldwide.

Many of the movie's most iconic scenes were filmed at Hell's Half Acre in Natrona County, which depicted an epic 23rd century battle between humans and insects on the fictional planet of Klendathu.

Although it didn't win an Oscar, it was nominated for the Best Visual Effects Award. It spawned a series of sequels and remains a cult-classic two decades later.
