Today is a perfect time to get into the true spirit of Christmas by helping those who are helping families here in Cheyenne, by volunteering with the Laramie County Food Basket Program.

Last year, more than 900 baskets were assembled and handed out to families who wouldn’t have much of a Christmas, without the help of the American Legion Post #6, and a host of volunteers.  This year the need for these food baskets are just as great, and the need for both volunteers and donations are still very much needed.

Today, (Saturday) volunteers are building boxes and cleaning the building where they’ll be assembling the food baskets. The Wyoming Tribune Eagle is taking donations through their 53rd annual Empty Stocking Fund drive. These food baskets contain “a 14 to 16 pound turkey, a half-gallon of milk, one pound each of margarine and cheese, two loaves of bread, five pounds of potatoes, and an assortment of canned fruits, vegetables and other non-perishables.”    Orders for these food baskets have already been taken, and will go to at nearly a thousand less fortunate families in Cheyenne.

According to Community Christmas coordinator Jackie Brand, the baskets will be ready on Thursday, December 18th.  For those unable to pick up their baskets, theirs can be delivered to their homes by volunteers.
