Is Jimmy Kimmel the new king of late night? Judging by last Thursday’s ratings coup, Kimmel may soon be worthy of the crown.

‘Jimmy Kimmel Live!‘ bested ‘The Tonight Show With Jay Leno‘ by 4% in the 18-49 demo, according to Deadline. Not too shabby considering Kimmel’s show comes on at midnight, a half-hour into Leno’s ‘Tonight Show’ which airs after the eleven o’clock news.

Kimmel’s victorious night didn’t end with Leno, however. ‘Late Night with David Letterman’ also felt the heat of rising competition, as Kimmel trounced Letterman by as much as 60% with adults 18-34 on May 7th and 9th and on the 11th, with a repeat. Ouch.

Kimmel also scored notable wins over late, late night competitors, beating out ‘The Late, Late Show with Craig Ferguson’ by 48% in adults 18-49 and putting ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon‘ in second place with the demo.

The numbers mark Kimmel’s first in-season win over Leno and his 7th straight win over Fallon. If Kimmel can keep it up, celebrities may have to reconsider whose couch they’ll want to be sitting on to talk-up their next big flick.

Deputy Chance Walkama, Sheriff Danny Glick (Doug Randall/TSM)

The Laramie County Sheriff’s Department recognized several agency members for outstanding service on Friday. That included a Purple Heart Award for Deputy Chance Walkama, who was shot by a suspect at the Fairfield Inn last November.

Walkama has since recovered and is back on active duty at the department. Sheriff Danny Glick recalled that Walkama had refused pain killers at the hospital and continued to be concerned about his fellow deputies and even the man who shot him. Glick said Walkama’s performance made him proud to lead such a group of people. Other award recipients were recognized for such things as saving the lives of prisoners who attempted to commit suicide at the jail as well as long-time service to the department. Glick himself received an award for 30 years of service at the award ceremony.

Wyoming Congresswoman Cynthia Lummis (R-WY) voted with the majority this week to pass a bill that reauthorizes the 1994 Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).  Grocery store workers in Wyoming and Colorado have reached a contract agreement. Councilman Jimmy Valdez (Amy Richards/TSM)

Cheyenne Ward 1 Councilman Jimmy Valdez says he is running for a fourth  term on the city’s g0verning body. Valdez, a local businessman, says if he is re-elected he would like to work for better planning of city projects as well as completion of those which have already been started. He cites the city’s legal battle to obtain a part of the Hollywood Video parking lot as the sort of situation that should be avoided.

Valdez says rather than the current situation, where city officials are invoking eminent domain and awaiting the outcome of a November court hearing on the issue, planners should have dealt with the issue ahead of time or had an alternative plan available. He says another example of unfinished projects is the tennis courts in Martin Luther King Jr. Park, which remain uncompleted despite the project having been started several years ago. Valdez has commented that he feels the city treats that park differently than parks in other areas of the city.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Thursday re-affirmed it’s decision to deny a re-hearing on a Preliminary Permit Application for Colorado Millionaire Aaron Million’s Flaming Gorge Pipeline Proposal. Governor Matt Mead signed a Memorial Day Proclamation Thursday urging residents to take a moment on Monday May 28 to remember those who have served this country and those who have sacrificed their lives, as well as their families. Evacuation orders have been lifted for the 65 homes around Bonner Springs Ranch Road, Deer Valley Road, Obenchain Road, and Ingleside Road.

However, the mandatory evacuation order for the 15 homes along Highway 14 from the Greyrock Trailhead to the North Poudre diversion dam (approx. mile markers 113 to 115) is still in effect.

Parts of HWY 14 are still closed.

Evacuees with large animals are being urged to take them to The Ranch at the Larimer County Fairgrounds in Loveland (5280 Arena Circle, Loveland, Colorado 80538).

Following the news last week of several new shows added, things seem to have gone south for Van Halen since then. Without much explanation, the legendary rock band just announced that they’ll be postponing all remaining tour dates after their June 26 show in New Orleans, La. With over 30 dates being postponed, the dates impacted start on July 7 in Uncasville, Conn. and span through a Sept. 25 gig in Milwaukee.

According to Pollstar, the band has already removed all of the dates from their website. However as of right now, the shows are only being postponed, hinting that they will be rescheduled at a later date.

Markets affected by the postponements include: Philadelphia, Baltimore,  Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Memphis, Spokane, Reno, Fresno and Wichita, just to name a few.

No particular reason has been given for the postponements, yet Rolling Stone reports that sources say the bandmembers “hate each other” and that they are “arguing like mad.”

Van Halen still have active tour dates running through May and June that have not been impacted by this turn of events, check out all the dates below including the postponed ones.

Van Halen are currently touring in support of ‘A Different Kind of Truth,’ their first album with singer David Lee Roth since ’1984.’

What’s your hobby? Do you belong to any clubs?

The 3rd Annual Cheyenne Clubs and Hobbies Day will be held Saturday afternoon, May 19, at the Laramie County Library, 2200 Pioneer Avenue.

The event is free and open to the public of all ages, it runs from noon until 4 p.m.

Venture Crew 101 helps prepare the Laramie County Library for the event each year.

Last year’s Cheyenne Clubs and Hobbies Day showcased 35 clubs and drew more than 1, 000 visitors to the library.

Some of the clubs and hobby groups participating are: Boys and Girls Club, Cheyenne Chess Club, Cheyenne Genealogical and Historical Society, Cheyenne Guitar Society, Cheyenne Lions, Beyond Cheyenne Youth Symphony, Cub Scouts (F.E. Warren Air Force Base), Duplicate Bridge, VFW Post 1881, Flores de Colores, Glass Artists of Wyoming, Gold Wing Riders Association, High Noon Toastmasters, High Plains Wanderers, Northern Colorado Rocketry Club, Positive Living Breakfast Club, Society for Creative Anachronisms, Therapy Dogs, Wendy’s Wonderful Kids, Wyoming Mounted Search and Rescue, and  Zonta Club of Cheyenne.

Venture Crew 101 is a non-profit group that is a branch of the Boy Scouts of America. It’s open to young men and women between 14 and 21 years of age.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol will be participating in the national “Click it or Ticket May Mobilization” campaign to step up enforcement in the area of seat belt use. Wyoming Highway Patrol spokesman Lt. Troy Mclees says the campaign will begin on Monday, May 21st.

Mclees says Wyoming statute requires all vehicle occupants to wear a seat belt, and all children under the age of 9 must be secured in a properly installed restraint not in the front seat. All Wyoming Highway Patrol Troopers have been issued new decals to install on their vehicle which display the message “Don’t Risk It. Click it or Ticket.“  The campaign will run through June 4th.

A federal wolf specialist says a gray wolf found dead on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge Reservation came from Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Doug Randall has the details. Dr. Mark Stock, LCSD#1 Superintendent

Laramie County School District 1 Superintendent Mark Stock says the district continues to face a challenge in finding adequate space for district classes and programs. Stock says one common misconception is that such problems could be solved simply by moving all 6th grade classes into the district’s Junior High Schools. Stock says those schools barely have enough space to hold the grades already housed in them.

For example, Stock says Johnson currently has only 50 students fewer than it housed when three grades were based there–and currently Johnson houses only 7th and 8th grade classes. Stock says one reason the problem is likely to be on-going is that even when new schools are being built–such as the new Prairie Wind Elementary School north of Cheyenne–by the time the construction process is completed, the district’s enrollment has grown.

The Wyoming Department of Health is reminding residents, especially those with heart or respiratory problems, to avoid breathing in air contaminated by smoke from wildfires. Spokeswoman Kim Deti says small children are also susceptible to such air contamination. Deti says for the most part people should simply observe common sense guidelines, such as avoiding wildfire smoke if they find it makes them sick. She says generally people should avoid heavy outdoor exercise on smoky days, and people who are especially smoke-sensitive may want to try to stay indoors. She also says people may want to avoid even some indoor activities on such days, such as vacuuming or smoking.
