Is there a financial plan in your future?

For many, especially students, planning ahead so you have money when you get older is the last thing you want to think about. The rock band Gooding hopes to change that with the help of Wyoming's Governor.

On Thursday afternoon, April 9, Governor Matt Mead will proclaim April as Financial Literacy Month in Wyoming. Gooding will be at the Governor's office in the state Capitol to witness the signing.

This week Gooding presents two Financial Literacy shows at Carey Jr. High School. After a short video introduces the band, showing pictures of them with performers like Willie Nelson and Chuck Berry, they capture the students attention with a set of songs. Then the lead singer Gooding delivers a message about being responsible with your money and being aware of predatory lenders and high credit card interest rates.

The Wichita, Kansas band was written about in the Wall Street Journal this week, telling about their Financial Literacy shows at schools across the nation. Funding the Future is the local non-profit organization that finds sponsors for the tour and schedules stops at schools.

Rita Pouppirt is the executive director of Funding the Future and she also is the owner of The Midtown Tavern with her husband Randy. After a chance meeting with Gooding at a bar in Arizona, they booked the band in Cheyenne and began talking about the idea of forming an organization to spread an important financial message to students.

Gooding will play a free show at The Midtown Tavern, also known as Anderson's Other Corner at 1303 E. Pershing Blvd., on Saturday, April 11. The performance is open to the public and starts at 8 p.m., I'll see you there.

Here's a video of some of my conversation with Gooding about their Financial Literacy Tour and the Governor's proclamation signing.
