Green Dot Card Scam Warning Issued
A spokesman for the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Department says a new telephone scam has been reported.
Dick Blust says the scam starts when the intended victim receives a call from someone claiming to be a police officer. The victim is told that a warrant has been issued for their arrest and that they need to pay a fine immediately to avoid going to jail. They are told to purchase a Green Dot Card, a legitimate re-loadable card available at Walmart and other retail outlets.
The victim is told to load the card with the amount of the supposed fine and call a phone number to identify the card number for the supposed fine payment. The money then disappears and the victim hears nothing more about the matter.
Sweetwater County Sheriff Rich Haskell says no legitimate police officer will ever call someone and order them to purchase a Green Dot Card to pay a fine. He recommends anyone who thinks they may have an outstanding warrant to call the appropriate court for information
