25 Years Ago, Def Leppard Singer Joe Elliott Publicly Dissed Soundgarden In Casper, Wyoming
Music fans across the world are mourning the loss of Chris Cornell today. The legendary voice of Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog and Audioslave was found dead early this morning after a sold-out concert in Detroit.
Unfortunately, Cornell never performed here in Wyoming. However, his band was the subject of some sharp words from Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliott before their concert at the Casper Events Center nearly 25 years ago.
"Hi, It's 1.26pm this afternoon, in Casper, Wyoming. The sun is out, but it's a bit windy...we got in last night, having just played Boise, Idaho, and Yakima, Washington.
I just read an article where the Chili Peppers said they hate us! It's a very strange feeling when you know someone doesn't like you but you're a fan...
A line or two on Soundgarden. I saw what you said in Kerrang!...at least I was there when the Pistols were around. Where were you? And I suggest you put your brain-dead roadie back in his little box and tell him to shut his hole. Grow up guys."
As far as we know, there was never a public feud between Elliott and Cornell, other than those comments. Hopefully they were able to meet and become friends over the years. In spite of their percieved differences, they both had iconic voices that helped define their generation.
