Despite tough economic conditions, Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen says local retailers are faring well.

As of January 31, the city was $600,000 below forecast on revenues and $1.1 million below forecast on expenditures.  Retail trade on the sales and use tax, however, was $300,000 above forecast.

"Compared to prior years we're up about 1.3 percent," said Kaysen. "I think that speaks somewhat positively for local businesses having a good year so far in the current fiscal year."

Kaysen attributes the increase to a combination of factors, including lower prices at the pump.

"The economy is still doing pretty well in the Cheyenne area, unlike where the bigger drivers have been for some sales tax dollars the mining and whole sales tax tied together," said Kaysen.
