These are dark days for some that usually go unseen. Last year, there were some 230 children without homes in Laramie County School District 1. The poverty rate in Laramie County was 10.5% in 2015, compared to 11.6% for the state of Wyoming according to KGWN. There is a severe shortage of low income housing in Cheyenne and the scary thing is, many of us are just a few paychecks away from losing everything.

That’s why United Way of Laramie County, UW and Community Action are working together to bring awareness of the less fortunate. In a Tuesday simulation at LCCC, members role played impoverished families trying to survive on a very limited budget, to help people understand the realities of poverty and discuss ways of addressing it.

Family Promise has been helping families get shelter and back on their feet for the last 15 years. This Saturday, they are hoping for your support by holding their second annual Cardboard Box City at The Depot Plaza.

Last year, about 20 people came out to build a cardboard box home and spend just one night in them to support those without a home. Family Promise raised some $4,000 from that event. I hope they can do better this year. With your help, they can.

Support or be a part of Box City Saturday, 4pm at the Cheyenne Depot Plaza.

Jon Bon Jove and Jennifer Nettles address the situation in a song with this video.
