Throwback Thursday: 1997 Broncos-Chiefs Divional Round Game

With the NFL playoffs in full swing, I thought it would be fun to look back on some memorable Broncos playoff moments so THIS week, we take it back to January 4, 1998.

The 97/98 season was one of the most memorable seasons for Bronco Nation... not only for the fans but for the entire organization. Coming off of their crushing playoff loss to Jacksonville at Mile High Stadium the year before when they were the #1 seed in the playoffs, the Broncos said goodbye to the old "orange crush" uniforms and D logo to the current uniform scheme.

More importantly than the uniforms was the season that the Broncos put together, it was a memorable one but one that kind of seem to lose its luster after losses in Kansas City and Pittsburgh set the team back to the Wild Card round and away from the bye week.

That however...only set the stage for what many called in the organization as the "revenge tour". After paying back Jacksonville in the Wild Card round, it set the stage for what former Broncos head coach called "the greatest game of his career" (and he won two Super Bowls).

The Broncos and KC split the regular season with both teams winning on their home field and in this Divisional Round game, the Broncos, instead of using John Elway's arm and 4th quarter comeback heroics used what they used for most of the year...a dynamic running game featuring the great Terrell Davis and a punishing defense.

A couple of 1 yard td plunges from TD (Terrell Davis), the last one coming in the 4th quarter was the difference in the game and while this wasn't one of those memorable games in terms of comebacks and fantastic finishes...it launched the Broncos to their first Super Bowl win ever a few years later when they toppled the Green Bay Packers in Super Bowl 32 where former owner...the late Pat Bowlen raised the Lombardi postgame and stated to the world that "this one's for John". It was Elway's first Super Bowl win after 4 previous unsuccessful attempts in the 80's and early 90's.
